A Beginner’s Guide to Klout

Tuesday, June 7th, 2011

So what is Klout and why does it matter? Klout measures influence across the social web. We assign a Klout Score from 1 to 100 based on your ability to drive action. We also find your most influential topics, your influencers, who you influence, as well as other stats surrounding your influence. Think of it as a social credit score that will increasingly impact your life.

How do we Score? We believe influence is the ability to drive action. We are not focused on follower or friend count but instead look at social actions such as Retweets, @messages, likes, and comments. If you have a lot of highly influential people engaging with you on a regular basis you will have a high Score. We score based on Twitter and Facebook (more networks coming soon) Learn more.

How can I use Klout as an individual?

  • Benchmark your own success: Note as your own (or your business’s) Klout Score goes up or down. If there’s a dramatic change that indicates something you’re doing is working (or not). You can also check out our tips for increasing your Score.
  • Get Klout Perks: If you’re registered for Klout you’re eligible to receive Perks such as early access to products or exclusive events. We’ll notify you when you’ve received a Perk. Learn More.
  • Recognize people who influence you: We recently introduced the ability to +K (give Klout) to people on the topics they have influence you on. This is a powerful way to thank the people in your network. Learn more.
  • Find out who you influence: Your Klout profile shows you who you influence and how many people are in your True Reach. This can help you understand if your message is reaching your audience and who is really listening.

How can I use Klout as a business or application?

  • Engage with influencers: Businesses can use Klout Perks to connect with top influencers in a given topic and offer them the chance to try your product. Learn more.
  • Know who to connect to: Look at the Klout Scores of the people in your community to find out how to most effectively use your time. Those with high Klout Scores have the ability to impact a large audience. You can use tools like Hootsuite, Cotweet, Seesmic, or even Klout Chrome and Firefox Twitter extensions to help you do this. Look not just at Klout Score but at their topics of influence and who influences them to understand what they care about.
  • Use Klout data: If you’re an application looking to integrate Klout data we have an API you can use. Learn more.

What’s the story on the company itself?

We’re a startup in San Francisco, founded by Joe Fernandez and Binh Tran in 2008. We’re VC funded and we have about 40 employees. We believe everyone has influence and our mission is to help people understand and grow that influence. And, yes, we do check our own Klout Scores. Learn more.

Let us know if you have any other questions. Thanks!

Does Your Office have Klout?

Friday, May 27th, 2011

Who in your office has the most Klout? We’ve heard stories of offices having friendly Klout competitions where the highest score gets to choose lunch or perhaps just gets bragging rights. We occasionally partake in such competitions ourselves and wanted to make it easy for people to track their friends or coworkers in one place.

Our new lists feature on your dashboard and profile lets you track this easily. Just add the usernames of your competition, whether it be the whole office or your team and get started! You can add up to 10 people to any given list (we may increase this in the future). You can see part of Klout’s leaderboard below (looks like it’s my turn to choose lunch).

So who has the most Klout at your company? Create your own lists and let us know who’s winning!

Revinate Brings Klout to the Hotel Business

Tuesday, May 24th, 2011

Word of mouth is essential for hotels. One bad review or mention can turn people off, and a good one can bring in new business. This is why Revinate, an enterprise-grade social media solution for hotels, has now integrated Klout as their standard influence metric.

Understanding influence allows hotels to concentrate their efforts on their most influential customers as well as understand the reach of their mentions online. Hotels can offer upgrades or complimentary items to top influencers as well as make sure to thank them for their stay. Increasingly, hotels are aware that they need to consider the value of a customer, not just in their lifetime spend, but in their ability to bring in new customers.

What ways have you seen Hotels use Klout Scores? Do you think this will change the way they do business or the way you interact with hotels online?

Thank your Influencers for #FollowFriday

Friday, May 13th, 2011

Where would you be if it weren’t for your influencers and supporters? Influence is inherently about relationships. Just as it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a whole network to raise a Klout Score.

Twitter’s #FollowFriday tradition is a great chance to take a moment to thank the people who have made social media awesome for you. Why not tweet a #FF to those who you influence (your fans) as well as those who influence you?

All you have to do it go to your Klout profile and click the influencers tab. There you’ll see a list of people you influence and, below that, a list of people who influence you. Both lists have lovely tweet and share buttons. Furthermore, these lists update every Thursday, so you’ll have a new list every week for #FollowFriday.

Now just tweet away (add in #FF or #FollowFriday at the end)! Even @Souljaboy is doing it.

If you feel that your influencer lists don’t fit with your social profile, you can always mouse over the image of someone and remove them from your public profile. They also then won’t show up in your tweet. Let us know if you have any other questions. And, of course, happy Friday!
