These Athletes are the Gold Standard of Influence

Friday, July 27th, 2012

The summer games started today, and seemingly every website and TV station will let you know this. You’ll see medal tallies, rising flags, crazy fans and media sources giving you the insights you want.

Or you could just go right to the source—the athletes themselves. No one knows more about what’s happening than the men and women sent by their countries to represent them and compete for podium positions. These summer games are chock-full of athletes who know their ways around social media and regularly provide unique, influential content to their networks.

When it comes to ruling the the social media world, The King is king. LeBron James and his 89 Klout Score are the gold standards of influence for athletes. He regularly tweets and shares photos of his Team USA basketball teammates while they are out of the media’s eye; eating dinner, visiting tourist traps, or meeting their dopplegangers.

Klout has compiled a list of some of the most influential athletes competing these next few weeks. If you’re looking for the athletes with the best insights and content, this is a good starting point. Perhaps you’ll be able to feel a hint of what it must be like to prepare for a gold medal moment.

Note: The list was compiled from NBC’s top athletes to watch at this year’s summer games, then arranged by Klout Score.

Will Usain Bolt finally be eclipsed? Can Michael Phelps match his incredible ‘08 performance? And of course: Will we witness, for the first time in history, someone tweeting from the podium? We’ll put the odds at 2:1.

We’d also like to thank our friends at SimplyMeasured who helped us whip up the Twitter stats. Check them out at simplymeasured.com

Who are you rooting for in this summer’s games?

Team Klout Walks to Help End AIDS

Thursday, July 19th, 2012

Sunday, July 15, 2012, was a typical foggy day in San Francisco. More than 20,000 people from all across the Bay Area gathered in Golden Gate Park for one mission: to help end AIDS.

Everyone gathered around the event’s main stage for the opening announcements. “AIDS Walk is vital to our efforts to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS and make sure all people living with the disease have access to proper care. This year, the foundation marks its 30th year of answering the call from our community.” said Neil Giuliano, CEO of San Francisco AIDS Foundation.

Team Klout was also on the ground donating its time and feet to the cause. Twenty Klout employees, plus their friends, family and one puppy walked the 10k course on Sunday as they shared the experience on Facebook and Twitter. Team Klout raised more than $1.1k in funds to help fight AIDS.

Other companies, such as Twitter, Pixar, Google and Starbucks were also out at the event to support the end of AIDS. Katelin Holloway, Director of People and Culture at Klout, talks more about her personal experience at AIDS Walk SF:

“Influence encompasses so much more than how many Facebook friends you have, who retweets you, and what restaurants to go to. Influence also includes helping your community to find its voice, illustrating a cause, and effecting positive change. On Sunday we used our influence to raise awareness about AIDS. We took a stand with our community to help fund the research that will end this epidemic. I’ve been participating in the San Francisco AIDS Walk for 7 years, honoring the memory of someone very close to me. It’s such a deeply personal event and I was thrilled to be able to walk alongside my coworkers this year. My heart swells with pride seeing a whole community pull their influence together and make a true impact.”

Earlier this month, Klout users were able to take part in this event thanks to the Klout for Good and AIDS Walk San Francisco partnership. Klout users were asked to help spread the word about the campaign on Twitter, and each tweet would push a virtual Klout team 2.5 meters. Influencers answered the call and reached the 10k goal by the fourth day of the campaign. To date, virtual team Klout has completed the animated course nearly twice—19,520 meters.

In total, all walkers at the event helped fundraise $2.7 Million and walked more than 124,000 miles. That is almost the equivalent of walking around the Earth five times!

We at Klout want to thank you all so much for your support with AIDS Walk San Francisco and continued support with our Klout for Good program!

How Becoming CEO of Yahoo! Boosted Marissa Mayer’s Klout Score

Tuesday, July 17th, 2012

Marissa Mayer became CEO of Yahoo! yesterday, and we took a look at how the outpouring of social media activity around this announcement affected her Klout Score. Starting with a Klout Score of 60, Marissa was already in the upper echelon of Klout Scores prior to the announcement. The news about her becoming CEO of Yahoo! boosted her score by 10 points in just one day, to a 70, with her Tweet announcing the news, generating more than 2,800 retweets. Marissa’s announcement was retweeted by many other social media influencers, including Kevin Rose and Michael Arrington.

Ariana Huffington, Dick Costolo, Jack Dorsey, and many others sent personal congratulatory tweets, further boosting Mayer’s Score.

Last night Marissa Mayer announced some more big news — her pregnancy. We’ll be watching to see how much of a baby bump there will be in tomorrow’s Klout Score!

Top 10 Comic Book Publishers

Thursday, July 12th, 2012

The San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) starts today. It is the nation’s biggest convention for comics and pop culture elements and has had a self-imposed cap on attendance of 125,000 since 2007. Originally intended just to exhibit comic books, it has grown in scope and has panels on everything from comics to television to movies. Some of the largest and most popular shows give panels here, such as Glee, Warehouse 13 and Game of Thrones, with attendees sometimes waiting in line half a day or more for good seats.

While not a comic book fan from childhood like some people, in recent years I fell in love with some of the more modern series. Invincible by Robert Kirkman (of Walking Dead fame) is an excellent series that jumps right into the action and later backpedals to explain story as needed. Other stories, such as DC Comics’ move to reboot their entire universe back to Issue #1, allows new readers to start without needing to know decades of back story. In some cases, this allows for some big changes such as The Ultimate Spider-Man’s star as a teen named Miles Morales rather than the originator of the role, Peter Parker. Marvel Comics hasn’t done a reboot, but they have made some of their own headlines when X-Men member Northstar married his longtime partner Kyle last month. The world of comics continues to change daily and what better place to find out some of the new scoops than at Comic Con? Hold on to your comic boards as you look at our top 10 influential comic book publishers by Klout Score:

If you’re going to Comic Con this year, what are you looking forward to the most? Let us know.

Welcoming Our Newest Kloutlaw – Emil Michael

Monday, July 2nd, 2012

Klout team members (or Kloutlaws as we prefer to call ourselves) are a special breed. We are obsessed with empowering everyone to discover and be recognized for their influence and pride ourselves on the passion with which we embark on this mission.

Today I am proud to announce that Emil Michael has joined Klout as our COO and is the newest member of our Board of Directors. Emil is more than overflowing with all the qualities of a Kloutlaw and will be overseeing all business functions of Klout. Emil has an extensive background as an entrepreneur and operator that includes time as Senior Vice President of Field Operations for TellMe Networks, a senior official at the White House, and an investor/advisor in some of the best tech companies in NYC and Silicon Valley.

This hire is incredibly special to me personally. Since I started Klout four years ago with a dream where every person was recognized for the power of their voice online, I’ve been fortunate to be joined by an amazing team. It started with my co-founder, Binh Tran, who focused on technology, and Matt Thomson, who was our first business hire and has basically filled every role possible. Now, with over 40 billion API calls monthly, millions of Klout users and brands like Chevy, Microsoft, Gilt and others recognizing the Klout of their customers, we are making this vision a reality. With the addition of Emil we are poised to take everything we’ve done to the next level.

Please join me in welcoming Emil to Klout with a +K on his Klout profile.
