The Final Four is Klout Score gold

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

The four universities use their influence for community building and keeping their fan bases buzzing.

Making the NCAA Final Four in college basketball is a big deal. We’re talking a big, huge deal; both for the teams and their fans, as well as for the influence of those universities. The evidence is in the Klout Score—the further each team advanced in the NCAA tournament, the more its influence grew. When each team qualified for the Final Four, their Scores spiked.

The University of Kansas, the University of Kentucky, the University of Louisville and the Ohio State University men’s basketball teams advanced to the Final Four in New Orleans this past weekend. The social media buzz surrounding each team has flooded news feeds and the fan bases’ thirst for more, more, MORE is unquenchable. Each school’s social media manager has answered these demands by using their heightened levels of influence for showcasing exclusive content and community building.

These four teams are accustomed to social buzz, as they are some of the most historic programs in the NCAA. To see powerhouses like these have their Scores spike so sharply is eye-opening. Klout wanted to see how the teams were handling their rises in influence and if their social media strategies had changed.

Annie Werner runs Kansas basketball’s social media. She said on non-game days the most successful content is pictures and videos of the players and coaches as opposed to user-generated content. The fans flock to this type of content and share it over and over again. In general, the best content, she said, is a final score Facebook update after a victory with a picture attached. Werner’s crowning achievement has to be this picture of Kansas Head Coach Bill Self after Kansas’ close win over Purdue in the NCAA third round.

Werner’s focus this week has been to provide a buffet of original content to hold over the fans until Saturday’s game.

Kentucky is absolutely no stranger to the Final Four, but still, when the team defeated Baylor in the Elite Eight its Klout score grew. Before the tournament started mid-March, Kentucky wanted to engage its users more and add followers and fans. A Final Four run does the work for you. They’ve added thousands of fans on Facebook, and the team’s social media manager, Guy Ramsey, has been working full tilt to keep pace with the demand.

“The appetite is insatiable,” he said. “I just try to get as much content as possible out there.”

Luckily for him, he has unprecedented access to the team, and a behind-the-scenes picture generates buzz for the team like few other updates can. Also a major hit with fans: cutting down the nets.

Louisville’s social media guru is Brian U’Sellis. He had a unique situation, which most schools would welcome with extremely open arms. On the same day his basketball team advanced to the Final Four and its social media networks lit fire, Louisville swimmer Carlos Almeida won the 200-yard breaststroke NCAA championship. He wanted to make sure Almeida got his proper due, which he did, but it gave rise to possibility of using the Final Four buzz to advertise for other Louisville events. Ultimately, like the other social media managers, U’Sellis didn’t want to muddy this week’s excitement with ads.

“It’s easy to turn this into a business opportunity, but we use social media to keep the fans excited,” U’Sellis said.

U’Sellis’ knew fans wanted all the content they could possibly read, so he launched the #L1C4 campaign, which wound up helping increase the school’s Klout Score. #L1C4 (Louisville First, Cards Forever) invited former players to tweet and share their thoughts about the current team’s tournament run, and then to rile the fan base with more excitement. It, combined with the Final Four achievement, jumped Louisville’s Klout Score 10 points overnight. Good luck trying to match that.

Ohio St. was direct about where they are channeling their higher influence: “One-hundred percent, it’s got to be fun,” said Pat Kindig.

Kindig said the last few days have been a whirlwind as he tries to give fans as much content as possible. He knows people love hearing great things about their team, so when a sports personality like Dick Vitale tweets he thinks Ohio St. will defeat Kansas on Saturday, Kindig will retweet that for the masses.

Kindig tries to keep Buckeye fans informed, but he said there is nothing more boring than a static tweet about tickets. Yes that information is important, but it can be packaged better; say, with a picture of a player dunking, or fans going wild.

The evidence is clear, with Final Four success comes influence. How a school handles that influence might differ, but keeping the excitement high clearly keeps your Score high, too.

Klout for Good: Donate your birthday to charity: water!

Thursday, March 22nd, 2012

Everyone has influence, and we believe influence comes with responsibility—the responsibility to help other people. We’re excited to launch a new Klout for Good site where you can connect with causes and non-profit organizations. We invite you to use Klout for Good as your springboard for driving positive social change.

We’re kicking off the new Klout for Good today with our partner charity: water in honor of World Water Day! This nonprofit’s mission is rooted in one number: 1,000,000,000. One billion—that’s the number of people in the world who do not have access to clean drinking water. It’s mind boggling, frustrating and tragic. A child dies every 19 seconds because they have no option but to drink dirty water, polluted with germs and bacteria.

We can help them, and it’s easy. Pledge your birthday to charity: water to contribute to the cause. Simply ask family members and friends to donate money to charity: water in your name for your birthday, and then the organization will use that money to build wells, water drills or water sanitation systems in areas desperate for clean drinking water. Twenty dollars gives one person access to clean water. What birthday gift could compete with that?

We can do this. We can make a substantial, life-saving impact on humanity. With your influence and ability to share information about this dire situation, we can improve life on earth. We encourage you to visit Klout for Good to learn how you can pledge your birthday to save a life.

Badgers Rule the Insanity World

Tuesday, March 20th, 2012

The real-deal March Madness tournament truly started on Thursday (opening round/play-in games notwithstanding), but Klout employees felt the Madness itch a little early. So, we created Influencer Insanity, our own 64-team bracket, in which thousands of Klout users participated. We wanted to find what university you would deem the most influential about college basketball, and by the championship round, the contest wound up a little more intriguing than we predicted.

After receiving the most +K votes in every previous matchup, in-state rivals Marquette University and the University of Wisconsin-Madison clashed for the Influencer Insanity crown. Both schools’ fans rallied to the cause, but when the buzzer blared, the Badgers reigned the college basketball influence kingdom, 3,745 +Ks to the Golden Eagles’ 2,740 +Ks.

University of Wisconsin – Madison Tweets:

Marquette University Tweets:

Congratulations, Badgers!

Really, congratulations to all of Wisconsin. You guys engaged and influenced your fan bases and networks on a scale no one could match. Plus, both your teams are still alive in the real NCAA tournament!

So, until next year, the University of Wisconsin-Madison will wear the crown of most socially influential college basketball team. Until then, prep your +Ks for next March when Wisconsin will defend its throne.

Enjoy this year’s NCAA tournament and good luck on your brackets! May you swim in the cash of your office pool come April 2. You all picked Ohio U. to advance to the Sweet 16, right?

Klout Star: Christine Kirk

Monday, March 19th, 2012

Our Klout Stars series highlights top influencers and how they got to where they are today.

About:
Christine Kirk is Founder and CEO of Social Muse Communications, advising luxury travel, restaurant, technology, and lifestyle brands on social media marketing, traditional public relations campaigns, and online branding. She has amassed over 18,000 engaged followers on Twitter, and growing, and is a guest blogger and speaker on various social media, PR and luxury lifestyle subjects. Additionally, Christine is the founder of the popular live Twitter chat called #luxchat, which takes place on a quarterly basis, and is a live online discussion about the intersection of luxury brands and social media. Prestigious past guests include, Lexus, The Ritz-Carlton Hotels, Four Seasons Hotels, Exclusive Resorts, Bergdorf Goodman, and many more. Christine is also a freelance writer covering luxury travel and food for CBSLA.com, JustLuxe.com, and an editor for LAWoman.com.

1. How did you get started in social media?
My career started in social media 9 years ago – back when Friendster was the social network du jour and the word “blog” was not a mainstream word. I realized quickly that social media was going to be the future of public relations – and I wanted to be a part of building and growing a new industry – and not keep doing the same traditional communications that had been done for decades. Being part of shaping a new industry got me excited, and while for years my bosses and supervisors had no clue what I was doing, I stuck with it on behalf of my clients because I was passionate about it, and I knew that social media would change the way the world communicates.

2. In what ways does social media play into your current job or industry? Do you have any examples?
I live, breathe, eat, and sleep social media on behalf of my amazing clients in the luxury hospitality and tech industries. I manage the online presence for brands on a daily basis across social networks like Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Ustream, Pinterest, Instagram, and Google+. Social media offers luxury hospitality brands the ability to provide their guests and customers with 5-star service before that guest even sets foot on the property of the hotel, or walks through the door of the store. Many people plan their vacations online, asking their friends for recommendations, and tweeting or Facebooking about how excited they are to be going on a trip. If the social media presence is managed correctly, the hotel can greet a guest before they are even on property, arrange for any special requests or in-room amenities in advance of their stay, and then interact with the guest while on property, providing concierge services or addressing any questions about the hotel or the destination itself. Finally, the hotel can keep in touch with their guests after they’ve left the hotel, thanking them for their stay, and continuing to stay top of mind. Now THAT is 5-star service! Luxury brands – whether it be in the hospitality, fashion, retail, or automotive industries – pride themselves on the quality of their product and service. These days, a luxury brand not engaging in social media is not providing their customer with 5-star service.

3. What does influence mean to you? Who influences you the most online, and why?
Influence to me means inspiration. My goal on social media with both my client’s online presence, and my own personal brand is to INSPIRE – to be happy, to find your passion, to laugh, to enjoy the little things, and to enjoy the journey of life. If we can give that to our audience online, then we’ve done our jobs. As a luxury enthusiast, I am influenced and inspired online by brands like @Bergdorfs, @RitzCarlton, @FourSeasons, @Burberry, and @Lexus.

4. What recent social media trends do you think are interesting or helpful?
I think the social media trend for 2012 is VISUAL. Social networks and photo-sharing apps like Pinterest and Instagram will continue to thrive and go mainstream. Pictures really do speak a thousand words. Also, I think 2012 will be another big year for online video – including premium, user-generated, and live.

KXKW: How #SxSW Influenced Us

Friday, March 16th, 2012

Klout went to SxSW this year to touch base with friends and peers in the tech community. We had a great time connecting with people who influence us and learning who influences them.

We started off by inviting Klout family and friends to the #KloutKrib for a little afternoon delight. With good company all around, we feasted on Torchy’s Tacos and knocked back PBRs.

We then filmed a little documentary about influence. A big part of SxSW is saturating your brain sponge after all! We asked people a simple question: who influences you?

Music and Videography by Mark Likosky

With all the people connecting, ideas brewing and bottles popping, we knew that SxSWers would need to refuel. We brought in the big boys, Pecos Tacos, to the corner of W. 6th and Rio Grande to give out free tacos on Friday and Saturday nights! The taco truck, decked out in Klout colors, invited people to feed their influence.

To get a glimpse of our SxSW trip on the ground and on Twitter, check out our Pinterest and Storify.

Thank you everyone who came to hang out with us at #KloutKrib! It was great catching up with old friends and connecting with new people. To all of SxSW, we hope you enjoyed the #kloutacos and see you next year!

Sexy API from Klout

Tuesday, March 13th, 2012

Klout had an incredible 2011, and as the end of the year approached I felt so proud to be part of such an amazing team! We accomplished a lot, so the holidays came at a great time; it was a much-needed opportunity for the team to catch a break and have some fun with our families. At the same time, I was excited about all the incredible things we were gonna have a blast building. So when January 2nd came along, I was back at Klout HQ ready to go; as is customary at Klout, there was a fun challenge ahead. We’ve been hard at work for the past few months and we’re excited to share with you what we’ve built.

The challenge was to re-engineer Klout’s API to sustain its rapid growth and massive traffic—ten billion API calls a month and growing—and also to empower our clients with all the features currently available on Klout.com.

So I started by concentrating on the problem at hand; I find it much more productive than jumping into the solution or any implementation detail, going against our instinct as engineers. There’s a small select group of companies serving that type of massive API traffic but a peculiar number screams out of the infographic above. Klout is the only one with less than seven hundred employees; we actually only have about 76 troopers! And what does that number represent? That number tells me that as fast as our API should be, we need to be moving even faster as a team–we need killer productivity! Besides, everyone likes to go fast!

Let’s Play!

As seems to be a recurring fact in my life—see more on Why Did I Fall in Love with Play! Framework?—the technology stack chosen was the always awesome, lean-and-mean, super-duper productive Play! Framework. As I mentioned on my previous blog post, Find Your Klout, Play was designed to provide a powerful, easy to extend infrastructure, it uses fast non-blocking IO, and it uses a stateless model that makes horizontal scaling a cakewalk. There is such a joy that comes every time my terminal sings “play new klout-* –with scala”. And with this type of traffic, our API might just be the most heavily used Play! Framework application to date!

Our API has Swagger

We were obviously going to create a RESTful API, but there are some components of SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) that have a lot of value. Even though I wanted no part of that business, in any shape or form, new or old, and its verbose XML format (remember the productivity factor) the WSDL (Web Service Definition Language) does provides features that aren’t commonly seen in REST. The WSDL allows client proxies to be automatically generated (wsdl2java comes to mind); it also allows developers to create client interfaces easily. How could we accomplish that without deep-diving into thousands of lines of XML? Swagger son! Here’s how Wordnik defines their marvel: “Swagger is a specification and complete framework implementation for describing, producing, consuming, and visualizing RESTful web services.” Swagger allows our API to have a well-defined contract in JSON, the same format we are using on every single endpoint.

“Talk is cheap. Show me the code.” – Linus Torvalds

  • First of all, add the dependency on Swagger Play to your conf/dependencies.yml and run “play deps”. Then go ahead and define your data transfer class.
  • Now it’s time to define the controller. All the @Api* annotations are provided by Swagger. The code you are about to see doesn’t do much other instantiating the Score class and setting its value to 100 (I wish that was my Klout score).
  • We created an API trait to define all the business logic used on every endpoint. This trait provides an api method which we wrap each controller action with; this method does the validation, JSON transformation, and it tracks number of calls and response times with StatsD using David Ross’ super useful StatsD module. Stay tuned in our blog for another post on StatsD and our monitoring infrastructure soon.
  • Now it’s time to define our REST-friendly route for our endpoint, a walk-in-the-park with my beloved Play! Framework. To do that add the following line to conf/routes.
  • Caching is being done using Memcached, re-using Play’s support for it. Jay Taylor, Klout Perks’ lead engineer, wrote a nice wrapper for it.

We’re excited that the Play framework is now commercially supported by Typesafe, along with Akka and the Scala, all of which are firing on all cylinders at Klout. Building on a modern foundation like the Typesafe Stack makes it much easier for our development team to punch above its weight!

If you are down to Play! come join us and follow us on Twitter at @_felipera, @dyross, @ladlestein.

SXSW #ProTips From Klout

Thursday, March 8th, 2012

Oh how we love SXSW. Austin always does a fine job rolling out the red carpet for all things culture, including social media. If you’re lucky enough to attend the festival, you’re going to love it, but it’s also understandable to feel overwhelmed at the sight. You have so many options on what to learn, where to eat, what to drink, what to watch, and whom to meet that it can be difficult determining priorities or a schedule.

Our very own Klout Squad and Klout employees are laden with SXSW veterans, and we asked them for advice on how to manage your schedule, and where time is best spent at the festival. They agreed you should seize this amazing moment by taking in all you can, but do your best to not skimp on the networking opportunities, because ultimately that is where you will find the lasting benefits of your time in Austin.

Klout will also be at SXSW. Stay tuned for more details on how to connect with us in Austin!

We’re on the hunt for all things new and exciting at the festival. Where should we go and what should we be looking for? Do you have a festival plan of attack?
