Dive Deeper into Klout with Topic Pages

September 15th, 2011 by Chris Makarsky

Most people immediately reference the Klout Score, our 1-100 rating of a person’s overall influence online, when they think about Klout. As a single number, the Klout Score is useful in making quick judgments and ranking overall influence.

But users are more than a single number, and Klout’s more than just a score. That’s why we’re excited to launch our Topic Pages beta to a wider preview audience today.

Klout’s Topic Pages aim to provide more context about a topic: we present top influencers in a given topic, regardless of their overall Klout score. Pages showcase topical content that recently influenced others, surface top +K recipients, and that’s just the beginning — we plan to add further analytics, trends, and related content over the coming months.

The preview is now open to all users who opted into the Topic Page perk last month. Check back soon if you’re still waiting — we’re letting more people in every day. (And a tweet can’t hurt your chances).

We’ve received positive reactions from select users who previewed Topic pages earlier, and we’re excited to expand that group now. Please leave your feedback and what else you’d like to see in the comments below!

Q&A:

Q: How do I browse topic pages? How do I know I have access?
You’ll receive a notification when you’re added to the preview. Topic pages can be accessed by clicking through any topic link on the site, such as from someone’s topic page. We plan to add more discovery and search options in the future.

Q: How do you determine top influencers and content for a topic?
Top influencers are determined based on interactions and engagement from other topical influencers on content relating to a specific topic. Likewise, we curate topical content based on the engaging influencers, and their interaction with the topical content.

Q: Who can see topic pages?
Topic pages are open to users who opted into the Topic page preview perk last month. We’ll continue to let more users into the preview over the next few weeks.

Yes. I agree with Jade as well. I’m influential about cats, and I have no idea why.

I wish that you would have more topics available or allow Klout users to create their own. The current selection comes off as rather limited and arbitrary. For example, why would there be an Army topic without a Navy one? @NHLJets having New York Jets as a topic because ‘Winnipeg Jets’ isn’t an available selection is just ridiculous. It seems that anything new in the news or pop culture won’t come up as a topic if the required search term isn’t already in the database.

I agree there is an ‘influential about’ issue. Also … why can’t I connect my G+ yet??

Loving this feature – I think it will grow into something really significant as a resource to find people realted to certain topics.

I love that I am influential about Coffee and Auckland (both favourites of mine), and Agile Development and Product Management. However there are other topics that I regularly post on (such as Business Analysis) which don’t yet appear to have a topic page.

Can I echo some other posts and ask how you determine the topics about which we’re influential and when you decide to translate that into a topic page? For example, if it’s partly based on hashtags, #baot is the most common hashtag for Business Analysis. Thanks.

Does anyone know how long it will take for our scores to change with integrating our Google+ accounts?

What about different topics in other countries, regions or languages? I mean more specific ones?
How we can help, for example, from Greece where I establish my influence?
We need country or/and region data (f.e. Greece, France, Europe, Asia)

    Thank you!

Fantastic feature addition.  I love the level of “Trust” Klout is providing to the Social Media space. While things may not be perfect yet, Klout is definitely on its way to become the standard in the new age of Social Media credibility and authenticity.

I agree with other posts below that the most useful next revision will be the ability to nominate/add/suggest new/additional topics people are influential about.

  • Timbotown

Is there a page for ALL topics?

I agree with Jade. Until a few weeks ago, Klout kept saying I was influential about law! But I have no idea why! I know almost nothing about law!

  • Lordbronco

I have to ditto the below the users-I am a member of seething group of filmakers, but we don’t have the topic that we specialize in. I attempted to create “Crowdfunding” topic, but have no idea whether I created it or put in a request for it’s creation. Thanks.

It would be great if one could list the topics we tweet about. For instance, I often tweet about marketing and customer retention, but neither of these appears on my topics list. Perhaps because I don’t use hastags for these subjects?

So far it seems that the topics and the terms our influence is judged on are single words only. For example I rate as an influence of Pitbull but not Pit Bull which 95% or more of all my tweets etc are about pit bull not pitbull. Since pitbull as a single word generally refers to a musician as often as the dogs and pit bull as is proper refers to the dogs I think we need to find a way to fix this issue to accurately reflect our topics.

There have been so many great comments here.

I too would like to see a list of all the topics.  And I think it would be fun to see it broken down by location, even if only by country.

I don’t ‘get’ at all how the influencers were picked, but of course it is some complex mathmatics.  I tend to think though that it could use some refining.  On the “Starbucks” list, I am number #10 as @SbuxMel, and my extremely inactive profile, @sbuxcalendar is #9!  And Jim Hanna, who barely ever tweets, is #8. (He is @Jim_Starbucks). I can’t disagree that some of these profiles are important, but are they really THE top influencers when they’re SO inactive?? That level of inactivity just doesn’t equal “influencer” to me, but that is just my random two cents on it.  I don’t know.  I would’ve picked @StephenGillett who is the Starbucks CIO to be on the list somewhere (and I feel a bit competitive with him – I’ve met him once) but seriously, he IS an influencer, has huge Klout, and works directly as a Starbucks exec!

I think 10 is a short list, and top 20 might be interesting. For big topics like “blogging” I can hardly imagine even picking a top 10.

Oh yes, and I vote for @adambritten to be an influencer of something too! ;)

Thanks for bringing us topic pages!  It’s an absolutely fun feature!

We are all part of food and wine  culture — it has klout.

I think it’s great to have topics. This way I can be graded on what are my most important issues and how much I know.

  • http://twitter.com/GigiPicazio Gigi Picazio

It’s a nice feature BUT (there’s always a but) I don’t get really how it works. To make an example, let’s take the Topic Page “Hotels”. In this topic page there are brands with a Klout score of 38 “Tiara Resorts” and not brands with an higher Klout score like “Easytobook” for example… How is this possible? How you decide to show or not a person/brand in a topic page?

  • http://twitter.com/marlenewilkinsn Marlene Wilkinson

I’m loving the Topics pages – getting a lot out of them. It’s a good way to find people who are knowledgeable on the topics that interest one.
Glad you’re going to add more discovery and search options in the future. Looking forward to seeing an overall contents list of topics. Will we be allowed to suggest topics for you to rate? Or will there at least be a means of letting you know what we’re looking for, so that if enough people are looking for that topic you can consider implementing a page for it?
Thanks for what you have done already, and for all you are planning to do :)

Klout is not letting me pick my areas of expertise. Why is that? I’ve been involved in SEO for 4 years and tweet about SEO.  What Am I missing?

  • http://twitter.com/juanvillagran Juan Villagrán

In spanish tweets the topics doesn´t works ok, example @sangredecristo, a prayer group have the television topic, @benedictoXVI (the pope) have terrorism and cuba (and pope) i think that is a joke or an attack on my believes

Not in on this yet, but I’m very interested in seeing how this all works.  I’m relatively new but my inner sociologist is fascinated! I’m still trying to figure out what I’m doing.  Every bit of information helps.

There are no topics for generations – not Baby Boomer, Gen Y, Generation X or even a generic “Generations.” Could you add it? Thanks! http://www.jenx67.com/2012/05/what-is-klout.html
