10 Most Influential TV Shows

September 22nd, 2011 by Lan Nguyen

With the Emmy Awards recognizing television’s best programming this past weekend and dozens of shows premiering this week, we decided to see which TV shows have the most Klout.

Our list has a mix of long-running shows like The Daily Show (on air since 1996), and newcomers like Game of Thrones. They are evenly distributed across network, cable, and premium television; no network holds more than two spots. These shows have done a great job of engaging their fans: not only on the TV screen, but on your computer, tablet, and mobile phone. For that, we give them kudos and +Ks.

Did your favorite make the list?

It’s unfortunate the list only includes American-produced shows; I expect many shows aired on BBC America and PBS have as much, or more, klout than a couple of the above, especially considering at least two of the ten are American spin-offs of British shows.  Personally, I’d have like to have seen Doctor Who on the list. While not of American origin, it certainly influences me through pop culture references to things like other television shows, literature, music, and even food or styling products.

My favorite are not on this list : Big Bang Theory, Entourage, Breaking Bad and Two and a half Men. But HBO is on the top so happy am I.

Yes a shame UK shows not on the list, but this is typical of these “top” lists produced by various web stats companies, when you click through to them they are always USA-centric.

for me the best influences are: “TRUE BLOOD” & “Conan” “Dexter”

Fringe seems to be missing from this list.

Hey Amethyst, do you have an example of a TV show with more Klout? This is a comprehensive list but it’s possible we missed something, please do let us know. Thanks!

I LOVE the Daily Show. Considering the Colbert Show’s mastery of the internet, I would have expected it to be here too! But then, I’m a fan of Masterpiece Theatre and 30 Rock, so what would I know?

So if I watched television, these are the shows I should be watching…Of this list, I like Dexter, Daily Show, and Game of Thrones.

What no LOST? Not possible. No show engaged its fans via so many media platforms. 7 years ago it premiered and Oceanic 815 trended all day on Twitter!

Stunned @CW_Supernatural didn’t make this list considering the amount of tweets about it daily. Were you just evaluating the show’s @klout rather than say, number of accounts dedicated to the show?

    Hello, Megan.

Since I mentioned both BBC America and PBS in the previous comment, I’ll suggest a show from each of them.
As I said before, I and many other other self-proclaimed dorks/nerks/geeks find Doctor Who (produced in Britain, but aired in the states on BBC America, as well) incredibly influential AND engaging. The use of a product or mention of an entertainment in Doctor Who immediately makes me curious. At the very least, I will look more into the product/entertainment, even if I don’t make a related purchase or join a related audience. Whovians have a giddy sense of loyalty to the show and the subjects to which it refers, even in passing. We like our inside jokes, and we like to feel like we are IN ON them.

Secondly, so what if it’s ‘a kiddie show’, PBS’s Sesame Street has deep roots and a fantastic publicity team. I could sum that in one word (Elmo), but to look a bit more, Sesame Street appeals across generations. Children love it, because it’s made for them, made to relate to them, and gives abstract concepts a Their World application. Parents connect on both a nostalgic and “bonding with children” levels. With shorts spoofs such as “The G. Club” (Glee), and “True Mud”, contemporary pop AND alternative music acts “remixing” songs to reflect a Sesame Street theme of the day, and well-known celebrities sharing a sound stage with Muppets for word definitions, Sesame Street has done an exemplary job of updating itself without becoming defunct or unrecognizable (Go ahead; try to stay the same level of angry with Jude Law when he’s got a Muppet hanging off him as he tries to define “cling”, or think Colin Farrell too rough as he and the lovable Murray describe what “investigate” means).

Both shows also take every advantage of social media, as well as merchandising. They have official pages on Facebook, official accounts on Twitter, and several official “character specific” accounts on each. Type in the first three letters of either show–just the first three, “Ses” or “Doc”–into Google and they’re the first and most popular result. Mention the names of any of the characters and most people will know exactly who you mean without having to ask.

Clearly both of these television shows have real sway, as models for good media users, and daily life influence.

Sounds like a LOT of Klout to me.

I can see True Blood being number 1.

No, not even one of them — and we watch a lot of TV!  Looks like reality TV has way too much Klout.

I LOVE British shows like Merlin, Sherlock, and a lot more :)

I’m not surprised.  I’ve watched every episode  of Supernatural, but really — I’m getting tired of the show.  It’s getting old.   Time to move on to new and exciting lineups, like this year’s CBS :)

  • Laura Stark

None of mine made it, and I’ve never watched any of the ones that did make the list.  Guess I have no ‘klout’ in the TV world…

  • Kathsy49

Nice blog! very informative! I used to wonder what shows greatly affect the people. thanks to this now I know.

I should be more active on Klout because I find “The Good Wife” to be the most influential show, good writing, great acting, topical, I do not watch the other shows, except The Daily Show!
